In 1978, he purchased a Laurent Giles Vertue class timber yacht to explore the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland. Three years followed in the Mediterranean, then on to Australia via the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Yacht deliveries and a year maintaining the machinery on a commercial dive support vessel working out of Dubai and Bahrain supported the lifestyle.
In 1988 Michael qualified as a shipwright with an apprenticeship under two Halvorsen trained shipwrights at Allcraft Boats. In 1993, he relocated to Port Stephens to operate a successful shipwright and boatbuilding business for 12 years, prior to establishing E-Marine Survey in July 2004.
Restoration, repair and construction of fibreglass, timber, composite and steel vessels. Michael specialised in interior joinery, stainless steel and steel fabrication, masts and rigging, engine and shaft installations, and the application of polyurethane and protective coatings.
